Pen Name Problems

Recently I’ve been thinking about getting a head start on book covers. Searching out a designer, looking for stock photos I can use, fonts…all of the above. A voice in my head told me to do a search on amazon for the pen name I previously published under, Kat Stark. Sure enough, there is someone who is using that name. It’s been two years since I’ve hit publish on anything and I hadn’t thought about someone using this name until recently.

Finding pen names are hard. Most of last week, I spent coming up with names only to be disappointed by the similarities out there. The last thing I want to do is piggyback on another author’s success because of name similarity. So that was exhausting. Currently, I have a few names considered but nothing set in stone yet. This poses a problem for my book covers. Names can be changed but when you invest money into creating a book cover, it isn’t so cheap to have to redo all those things.

While this has been exhausting, I feel like I’m back to where I started. Which isn’t a bad thing. I love the anonymity of writing. It takes a bit of pressure off to be honest. I’m thinking to secretly publish under a new pen name and see where that takes me. In the beginning, it was easy for me to just write my story and publish it without thinking of costly promos and asking people to read a book they might not like but be afraid of telling me it isn’t good. At this point, I welcome all the criticism I can get. It’s how to learn to please your audience, it’s how you get better at writing.

This has just been a thought in my head for the last couple of weeks. Why not publish anonymously and let readers find the book and read it if they choose to? What do you think?
